Anchors for infrastructure

Anchors for infrastructure secure earth-retaining structures in and around road, water, and civil engineering works. This includes sheet piling along roads, retaining walls for viaducts and access/exit ramps, cofferdams for underpasses and abutments, and quay walls along waterways that are part of the main road network.

The wall absorbs and transfers ground pressure, water pressure, and traffic loads. For greater retaining heights or stricter deformation requirements, the wall is anchored. The anchor transmits the horizontal tensile forces to a stable soil layer behind the slip surface. Tendon anchors are an efficient solution for this: high anchor force, slender profile, and suitable for implementation adjacent to operational infrastructure.

Infrastructure projects have specific constraints: traffic flow during execution, limited workspace between lanes or existing structures, high durability requirements, and minimal maintenance during the operational phase. The anchoring system must be suitable for all three aspects.

What should you pay attention to

In the design and execution of anchors in infrastructure projects, multiple factors collectively determine the functioning of the structure. The interaction between the wall, anchor, and subsoil is supplemented with requirements from the operator and road user:

  • soil structure, soil type and sounding profile along the route
  • Traffic and surcharge in temporary and permanent phases
  • flow and road safety during implementation
  • cramped workspace next to in-use lanes or structures
  • vibrations and deformations relative to existing infrastructure
  • Lifespan and corrosion protection for permanent applications (≥ 100 years)
  • electrical insulation where cathodic protection or stray currents are present (PL3)
  • rights from administrator such as Rijkswaterstaat ROK and provincial guidelines
  • interaction with existing foundations, cables and pipes under the route

Early alignment between the constructor, contractor, administrator, and anchor supplier prevents delays in design approval and secures the schedule for traffic management and phasing. This is often decisive for the overall lead time in infrastructure projects.

 

Construction

An anchored earth-retaining structure in an infrastructure project consists of a wall, a waling, and an anchoring system that transfers horizontal forces into the ground.

The wall is usually a sheet pile wall or a combi-wall. The wall absorbs soil pressure, water pressure, and traffic loads and transfers them via bending and fixing at the base. For roads and viaducts, dynamic traffic loads and fatigue are additional points of attention in the design.

The purlin or distribution beam is placed at or just below ground level and distributes the concentrated anchor forces evenly across the wall. This prevents local deformations at the anchor head.

The strand anchor consists of an anchor head with wedges, a free length in a duct, and an anchored length which transfers force to the ground via grouting. The tensile force from the wall is thus transferred to a stable soil layer behind the active slip surface.

The wand, gording, ankerkop and anchored length work as a cohesive system tailored to the specific loads, service life and environment of the route.

Frequently asked questions about sheet pile constructions

For virtually all earth-retaining structures in and around infrastructure, including sheet pile walls along roads, retaining walls for viaducts and ramps, cofferdams for underpasses and abutments, and quay walls along waterways in the main road network. The anchoring system is identical; the chosen corrosion protection class and geometry will depend on the application.

For permanent infrastructure, anchors are applied in PL2 or PL3 with a design life of at least 100 years when correctly executed. For temporary phases during construction, PL0/PL1 anchors are common. The chosen corrosion protection class is determined by environmental, load, and functional requirements for the structure.

Deepro anchors are ETA-certified at system level, based on EAD 160071-00-0102 and in compliance with NEN-EN 1537. This forms the basis for application in projects under the Rijkswaterstaat ROK. Whether a specific application is compliant depends on project-specific requirements; Deepro provides support with the substantiation of this during the design process.

Yes. Strand anchors are supplied on reels in flexible lengths and are suitable for installation in confined working spaces. This allows anchors to be installed alongside live traffic lanes or existing structures, provided the design and phasing are coordinated in a timely manner with the managing authority.
