Retaining wall constructions and sheet pile anchoring

A sheet pile wall is a widely used earth-retaining solution for construction pits, quays, and excavations. The selection of the correct sheet pile profile, the method of sheet pile installation, and the anchoring of the sheet pile wall collectively determine the safety, deformation, and feasibility of the structure.

For larger loads and deeper excavations, a freestanding sheet pile wall is often insufficient. In these cases, a anchored sheet pile construction is chosen, where an anchor system transfers the forces to a more stable subsoil.

Within these types of constructions, strand anchors play an important role. These offer an efficient and technically robust solution for sheet pile anchoring, for both temporary and permanent applications.

A sheet pile wall is used to safely retain earth and water for building pits, trenches, quay walls and infrastructural works. When installing a sheet pile wall, steel profiles, also known as sheet piles, are driven into the ground to create a continuous earth-retaining wall.

Depending on the excavation depth, soil pressure, water pressure, and surrounding loads, a freestanding sheet pile wall is not always sufficient. In that case, a anchored sheet pile wall is chosen.

Strand anchors are an efficient solution for this, particularly with larger loads and deeper excavations. Compared to other solutions, such as strutting frames or traditional anchor systems, strand anchors offer several advantages:

  • higher load capacity
  • slimmer sheet pile construction
  • Better control of distortions
  • more working space in the excavation pit

This makes a sheet pile solution with strand anchors not only structurally strong, but also practical and economically attractive.

 

When installing sheet piles, you need to consider the following: * **Soil type:** The type of soil will determine the most suitable sheet pile material, thickness, and installation method. * **Groundwater level:** The presence and level of groundwater can affect stability and require dewatering. * **Load requirements:** The sheet piles must be strong enough to withstand the anticipated loads, such as soil pressure and water pressure. * **Environmental factors:** Consider noise, vibration, and potential impact on surrounding structures during installation. * **Site accessibility:** Ensure there is sufficient space for the installation equipment and that access to the site is adequate. * **Installation method:** Different methods exist, such as vibratory driving, hydraulic pressing, or jetting, and the choice depends on site conditions and constraints. * **Interlocking system:** The correct interlocking of the sheet piles is crucial for creating a watertight and structurally sound barrier. * **Anchoring or bracing:** Depending on the depth and load, anchoring or bracing may be necessary to provide additional support. * **Safety precautions:** Implement appropriate safety measures for personnel working on the site and around the equipment. * **Permits and regulations:** Ensure all necessary permits and approvals are obtained before commencing work and that the installation complies with local regulations.

When installing a sheet pile wall, several factors determine the functionality of the structure:

  • Soil structure and soil type
  • vibration sensitivity of the environment
  • choice of insertion method (pressing, vibrating or piling)
  • Sheet pile profile type and length
  • water pressure and groundwater level
  • connection to the anchor system

The choice of the correct execution method has a significant impact on the environment and the construction.

 

Construction of a sheet pile wall

The construction of a sheet pile wall begins with the selection of profile type, steel strength, sheet length, and driving depth. The sheet piles must have sufficient stiffness and moment capacity to withstand soil pressure, water pressure, and loads from traffic or adjacent structures.

For greater excavation depths, an anchored sheet pile wall is usually employed to limit the bending moment in the wall and reduce horizontal deformations.

An anchored sheet pile wall consists of:

  • Dam wall planks (the wall)
  • a purlin or joist
  • an anchoring system (such as a strand anchor)

In strand anchors, the load is transferred to the wall via the anchor head and the purlin. The anchored part of the anchor then transfers this force to the stable subsoil.

When designing and installing a sheet pile wall, therefore, attention must be paid not only to the wall itself, but also to:

  • anchoring force and anchorage length
  • corrosion protection
  • Order of execution
  • interaction between wall and ground
